Bae Suah At just 60 pages long, this novella is more haunting and resonant than books five times its length. It revolves around an unnamed twentysomething female narrator who struggles financially and is involved with the opaque and boring Cheolsu; much of the plot involves a surreal, picaresque attempt to deliver him roast chicken. Yet Bae manages to deeply and uniquely explore themes of poverty, working-class drudgery and existential malaise in an enigmatic and unforgettable way.
