Description

The Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea, President: Kim Seong-Kon, professor Emeritus at Seoul National University) supported author Pyun Hye Young’s participation at the Warsaw Book Fair in Poland and held a Korean literature event from May 18 to 21. Pyun’s first full-length novel ‘Ashes and Red’, which deals with the survival and decline of humans battling a plague, was named Book of the Year 2016 this January by Granice.pl, a Polish literature community on the internet.

On the morning of May 18, LTI Korea held a Korean literature event in partnership with publishing house Kwiaty Orientu and Minsk Secondary School in Minsk, near Warsaw. Kwiaty Orientu editor Edyta Matejko moderated the event, where a wide range of Pyun’s works were introduced to over 80 secondary school students. The event was followed by an interview with TVP3, a public broadcaster TV channel, which was played on the evening news.

LTI Korea also held a Korean literature event that afternoon at the Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna w Minsku Mazowieckim, the Minsk Public Library, which was attended by over 50 Polish readers. Pyun offered in-depth insights into her sources of inspiration for ‘Ashes and Red’ and her writing process at the event.

The event held on the morning of the 19th was attended by over 50 students from the University of Warsaw’s Korean studies department. The event was moderated by Professor Anna Paradowska, the head of the Korean studies department, to much enthusiasm. The event started with an introduction to Pyun’s works, which was followed by a question and answer session and an autograph session. The majority of the students in attendance had familiarized themselves with Pyun’s books, and asked a wide range of questions about her intentions, the context of the story, and the characters in the novel.

On May 20, Pyun attended the annual Warsaw Book Fair and successfully finished her schedule in Poland with an autograph session.
