Description

With support from the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea, President: Kim Seong-Kon, propfessor Emeritus at Seoul National University), Korean writers Bae Suah and Han Yujoo participated in the 13th PEN World Voices Festival, held from May 1 to 7. Organized by the PEN American Center, the PEN World Voices Festival is a literary event that encompasses a wide range of topics including world literature, human rights, and women. The two authors participated in three sessions and had the chance to introduce their books—Han Yujoo’s The Impossible Fairy Tale (published by Graywolf Press) and Bae Suah’s Recitation (published by Deep Vellum Publishing).

On May 2, Han Yujoo participated in the 7 PM Girl-Powered Fiction session at the Shakespeare & Co. bookstore in New York. Han took part in discussions on the role of female protagonists in novel narratives and the femininity of the writer with authors from the US and Sweden.

Both Han Yujoo and Bae Suah participated in Literary Quest: Westbeth Edition, held at 6:30 PM on May 4. Literary Quest, one of the festival’s representative events, was held at the Westbeth Gallery in the art community of Westbeth Village. Audience members would visit the rooms of participating artists and listen to their readings in this unusual event, where the Korean authors had the chance to discuss their works and Korean literature in a comfortable setting.

On May 5, Bae Suah took part in the Auto-Fiction session at New York University’s Institute of French Studies with French and Icelandic writers to discuss the impacts of a writer’s life and identity on their works.

Bae Suah, Han Yujoo, and other writers from all over the world had the chance to introduce their works and discuss their thoughts on literature at the many varied events hosted by the PEN World Voice Festival. LTI Korea will continue to work and communicate with literary festivals to find new ways of effectively promoting Korean literature in the English-speaking world.
