Description

LTI Korea attended the Frankfurt Book Fair which was held from October 14 to 18. On the occasion of the fair, LTI Korea also organized promotional events in Berlin, Frankfurt and Vienna for Poet Hwang Tong-gyu, whose poetry collections Stillness of the Blossom and Winter, 5 Minutes Past Midnight were published this year in German translation by Ostasien Publishing. At the Frankfurt Book Fair, where Indonesia was the Guest of Honor this year, LTI Korea displayed 84 works of Korean literature at its booth in the Korea pavilion, and held meetings with around 21 publishing agents from 12 countries, including the US, the UK, India, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Norway, Thailand, China and the Netherlands. LTI Korea organized a poetry reading session for Hwang at the Korean Cultural Center in Berlin on October 16. The event was moderated by Prof. Holmer Borchlos of the Koean Studies Department at the Free University of Berlin and was attended by nearly 50 students and the public. The reading was followed by a Q&A session during which the audience asked the poet several detailed questions. On October 18, Hwang Tong-gyu participated in a discussion at "Weltempfang" in Hall 3.1 of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The discussion was moderated by Katharina Borchardt from the literature desk at the German radio channel SWR2 (Südwestrundfunk2). LTI Korea held another poetry reading session at Fürstenberg Palace on October 19 for the students of the Korean Studies Program at the University of Vienna and the public. The event, which was moderated by Prof. Andreas Schirmer of the University of Vienna, was brought alive by the lively recitation of famous Austrian actor Christian Spatzek. The reading was followed by an award ceremony for the essay contest held earlier this year for German language speakers.
