The Istanbul Tanpınar Literature Festival / The Prague International Book Fair

Description

LTI Korea attended the Istanbul Tanpınar Literature Festival in Turkey and the Prague International Book Fair in the Czech Republic from May 6 to 17. Writers Yi Mun-yol and Kim Young-ha participated in the events organized by LTI Korea and interacted with their Turkish and Czech fans.

On May 7, Yi Mun-yol gave a lecture on the theme “Books of My Life” during which he played a video presentation on the works of Plato, the Analects of Confucius, and the Bible. On May 8, Yi held a lively discussion with Turkish author Hakan Akdogan on the topic “The Limits of Deficiency” at Atatürk Library in downtown Istanbul.

Kim Young-ha joined Yi Mun-yol in the Czech Republic. On May 12 they were interviewed by the Czech press, including Reflex magazine, the weekly Pravo and the literary journal iLiteratura. This proved to be an opportunity for the Korean writers to receive broader exposure in the local media.

On May 13, a book reading session for Yi Mun-yol’s Poet and Kim Young-ha’s I Have the Right to Destroy Myself, and The Empire of Light was held at the Studentský klub Celetná club. On May 15, the Korean Studies Department at Charles University in Prague organized a “Meet the Authors” event, which was attended by nearly 50 students who asked the writers several questions leading to a lively discussion.

The last Korean literature event that was held in the Czech Republic was back in 2011 when poet Ko Un was invited to the Prague International Book Fair. The events organized by LTI Korea thus provived Czech fans with the rare opportunity to interact with Korean writers and to satisfy their desire to learn more about Korean literature.

Our trip to the Czech Republic ended on a high note with a book reading and signing event organized by Argo Publishers in the Lecture Room at the Prague International Book Fair.
