Spain's La Noche De Los Libros Festival

Description

LTI Korea visited Madrid, Spain on the occasion of the La Noche de los Libros (A Night of Books) festival and organized special promotional events featuring poet Moon Chung-hee and writer Gong Ji-young, both of whose works were recently published in Spanish.

On April 22, LTI Korea organized an event on the theme “Women, Life, and Love” in which Moon and Gong spoke about their works I Am Moon (Spanish title, Yo soy Moon) and Our Happy Time (Neustros tiempos felices) respectively. Nearly 80 people attended the event and asked the writers inquisitive questions whose scope extended beyond the event’s theme, even including questions related to the reading habits of Koreans. A recording of the evening’s program was aired as part of the Planeta de los libras program on the Circulo de Bellas Artes radio channel in the last week of April.

On April 23, LTI Korea organized a discussion session between Korean and Spanish writers as part of the La Noche de los Libros festival. The three Spanish writers attending the event held in-depth discussions with Moon and Gong, especially about the former’s poetry themed on the body and life of women and the latter’s thoughts on capital punishment. The Spanish writers also read out excerpts from the Spanish translations of the Korean writers’ works.

The “Night of Books” is an annual festival held on April 23 in Madrid to commemorate the deaths of literary masters Cervantes and Shakespeare. Nearly 530 female writers, 200 bookstores and 213 public libraries and cultural institutions took part in the festival last year, holding close to 600 literary events in different corners of the city.
